(Sajjad Hussein) Islamabad, Sep 7 (PTI) A senior US State Department official has confirmed that his country has helped four of its citizens to be transported from Afghanistan to a “third country” by land. This is America’s first effort to evacuate civilians since the withdrawal of its troops from the war-torn country. The official told CNN, “When these American citizens crossed the border and reached a third country, they were greeted by our embassy.”
“They were greeted by our embassy when these US citizens crossed the border and arrived in a third country,” the official told CNN.
The Dawn newspaper, published from here, said in its news that the official did not reveal the identity of the country that the US used to evacuate its citizens, but in terms of land route, Pakistan is the closest country to Afghanistan.
The official confirmed on Monday that these are the first four Americans we helped evacuate in this manner since the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
“We don’t know which route they used, but we have no problem facilitating the evacuation of American citizens from Afghanistan,” Pakistan’s ambassador to the US, Dr. Asad Majeed Khan, told Dawn.
“Pakistan is providing all possible help and facilities in evacuating those willing to leave Afghanistan,” he said.
Ambassador Khan said that so far more than 9,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan via Pakistan and Islamabad is still in touch with the international community on the issue of evacuation.
