Washington, Aug 25 (AP) Two members of the US Congress arrived at Kabul airport without prior notice amid the chaotic situation in Afghanistan, prompting the State Department and US military personnel to deploy resources to provide them security and information. This information was given by US officials. Seth Moulton and Peter Meijer went on a charter plane on Tuesday and came back and stayed at Kabul airport for several hours. This led officials to complain that the seats held by the two could be used by other Americans or other persons leaving the country.
Congress members, however, said in a joint statement that they made sure to come on a flight in which the seats were vacant.
Both said in a statement, “As members of Congress, we have a duty to supervise the executive. We made this trip in secret and only after we left to minimize the risk and disruption to people on the ground. We were there to gather information.
Both the MPs have served in this area while in the army in the past.
Three officials with knowledge of the flight said that State Department, Defense and White House officials were unhappy about the incident because it was done without the coordination of diplomats or military commanders directing the evacuation.
