United Nations, Sep 21 (PTI) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday that the incidence of seizing power through force and military coups in the world seems to be increasing unexpectedly.

He said geopolitical divisions are reducing international cooperation, so he is calling for strengthening global governance and revitalizing multilateralism.

In his address at the start of the General Debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, Guterres called on world leaders to restore confidence and bring a new ray of hope, saying cooperation, dialogue and understanding are needed.

“We are also seeing an unprecedented increase in the incidence of seizing power through force. Lack of unity among the international community is not going to help in this.

“Geopolitical divisions are undermining international cooperation and limiting the capabilities of the (United Nations) Security Council to make necessary decisions,” Guterres said.

The annual high-level session meeting was held online last year due to the pandemic, but this time the presence of world leaders at the United Nations and the option of online participation have also been given. More than 100 heads of state, foreign ministers and diplomats from around the world are scheduled to attend the session at the historic General Assembly building.

He said the world needs to focus on prevention, peace keeping and peace building.

“We need to move forward on our shared efforts for nuclear disarmament and counter-terrorism,” he said. We need to take action to respect human rights.

However, the UN chief expressed concern that today’s multilateral system is too limited in terms of its capabilities.

“We need to strengthen global governance. We need to focus on the future. We need to renew the social contract. We need to ensure a new-age United Nations. ”

He said, “Covid-19 and the climate crisis have exposed our vulnerabilities. Now there is a need to raise a ray of hope. We can solve the problems we have created.

Guterres said, “The world is spreading mistrust because people see that fundamental rights and freedoms are being curtailed, corruption is taking place, billionaires are traveling in space, while millions of people are hungry on earth. And the youth do not see any future of their own.
