India expresses disappointment over UN human rights chief’s ‘inappropriate remark’ on Kashmir

United Nations/Geneva, Sep 14 (PTI) India on Tuesday expressed dismay at the “inappropriate comments” made by the UN human rights chief on Jammu and Kashmir, saying his remarks do not reflect the ground reality and uphold human rights. Any deficiency in keeping should be addressed in an impartial manner and should not interfere in the internal affairs of the country. United Nations/Geneva, Sep 14 (PTI) India on Tuesday expressed dismay at the “inappropriate comments” made by the UN human rights chief on Jammu and Kashmir, saying his remarks do not reflect the ground reality and uphold human rights. Any deficiency in keeping should be addressed in an impartial manner and should not interfere in the internal affairs of the country. Reenat Sandhu, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, said, “We have taken note of India’s references in the verbal update by the High Commissioner and express our dismay at his inappropriate remarks on the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which do not reflect the ground reality. Sandhu said this in India’s remarks on Tuesday as part of the General Debate on the High Commissioner’s orally updated position at the 48th session of the Human Rights Council.

Sandhu said India’s approach to the promotion and protection of human rights at the global level is “based on our own experience as a pluralistic and inclusive society and a vibrant democracy”.

He said that India believes that the promotion and protection of human rights is carried forward through dialogue, consultation and cooperation between countries and through the provision of technical assistance and capacity building.
