Washington, Sep 4 (AP) Health experts and medical organizations have called for a halt to the growing use of the decades-old anti-parasitic drug in the treatment of COVID-19, warning that it can have side-effects and that the drug may help cure it. There is very little evidence to be found. Most Americans facing a fourth wave of infections are using ivermectin, an anti-worm drug used for humans and animals, which is very cheap. Federal health officials mention it (the drug ivermectin) on most drug prescriptions.

Federal health officials have expressed concern over the mention of it (the drug ivermectin) on most drug prescriptions and its overdose. The drug was also given to inmates of a prison in northwest Arkansas to treat COVID-19, despite warnings from federal health officials.

On Wednesday, podcaster Joe Rogan told that he has been infected with the corona virus and that he has taken the same medicine. Rogan is against the anti-Covid-19 vaccine. Ivermectin is being promoted by Republican MPs, some conservative talk show hosts and some doctors. Information about the drug was spread through social media to millions of Americans who were reluctant to vaccinate. It has also been widely used in other countries including India and Brazil.

Top US professional associations for doctors and pharmaceutical experts this week called for an “immediate” end to the drug’s use except for its research-based use. The American Medical Association and two pharmacists’ organizations said, “We request doctors, pharmacists, and other healthcare workers to caution patients against using ivermectin in any form other than the indications and guidelines recognized by the FDA. ”
