Foreign Minister Dominic Raab said efforts by the Taliban to lock down the country after the withdrawal of Western forces from Kabul airport on August 31 could lead to a “refugee crisis” as people try to move to neighboring countries.

He said Afghanistan’s border is “heterogeneous and wide” and attempts to isolate the country from the rest of the world will fail.

“If the Taliban leadership, as they say, wants to stop the overnight brain drain, they will not be able to do so by closing the borders,” he told Times Radio.

He said, “You will see that a large number of refugees are going out and they have to be taken into the process. They will not be able to escape the refugee crisis just by closing a few roads, they will not be able to close the border of Afghanistan, which is heterogeneous and wide.

He also dismissed media reports in one-on-one interviews on Wednesday that he was on a seaside holiday this month when the Afghanistan crisis peaked.
