Nine people were killed and one is in critical condition in a horrific road accident in Assam’s Karimganj district on Thursday. According to the police, all of them were returning from Chhath Puja Ghat in a three-wheeler when a speeding truck coming from the opposite side hit them. The collision took place on National Highway 8 in Baithakhal area around 3.30 am.
Karimganj district’s Superintendent of Police Padmanabha Barua along with his team and health officials reached the spot. Barua said that all the bodies have been removed from the road and one seriously injured has been sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to the Patharkandi police, those killed in the road accident have been identified as Duja Bai Panika, Salu Bai Panika, Garuv Das Panika, Shambhu Das Panika, Lalon Goswami, Pooja Gor, Deb Gor, Sanu Ri and Mangle Karmakar. All of them were residents of Longai tea garden and were returning from Chhath Puja Ghat on the banks of Longai river nearby.
Patharkandi MLA Krishnendu Paul has appealed to the people to maintain peace through a social media post. He wrote, ‘In Baithakhai, information was received about a tragic road accident, in which 9 people died on the spot. I am constantly in touch with the police and the local people so that the bodies can be identified and the injured get treatment. According to the information so far, all of them were returning from Chhath Puja Ghat. I request everyone to maintain peace in the area.
