The number of Maoist affected districts decreased to 70 for the first time, the Ministry of Home Affairs informed

For the first time in three decades, the number of Left Wing Maoist (LWE)-affected districts has come down sharply to 70 in 10 states, with Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand showing the biggest improvement. The Ministry of Home Affairs has given this information.

25 districts of 8 states “most affected”

Of these, only 25 districts in eight states are now being seen as the “most affected”. Uttar Pradesh is now Maoist-free, according to a revised list of the Ministry of Home Affairs accessed by HT. Till two months ago, around 90 districts in 11 states that were affected by Left Wing Extremism received central assistance under Security Related Expenditure (SRE), while 30 districts in seven states were classified as “most affected”. .

Incidents of insurgency reduced by 70%

An official requesting anonymity said ÔÇťOverall, there has been a 70% reduction in Left Wing Extremism incidents from a high of 2,258 in 2009 to 665 in 2020. Similarly, the death toll of security forces and civilians has come down by 80% from the all-time high. The death toll which was 1,005 in 2010 has gone up to 183 in 2020.

Affected Districts Under SRE Scheme

The Ministry of Home Affairs decided to revise the list with effect from July 1 considering the improvement in the security situation, reduction in violence and development works. As per the list, only 70 districts in 10 states are affected and come under the SRE scheme. Under SRE, Maoist-affected districts get assistance from the Center for the purpose of reimbursement of security related expenses like transportation, communication, hiring of vehicles, stipend to surrendered Maoists, building infrastructure for forces, etc.

Security forces set up camps in Maoist strongholds

People familiar with it said that the geographic spread of the LWE effect has shown a marked reduction, with 47% fewer incidents in the past six years (2015 to 2020) than in the previous six years (2009 to 2014). After this, the security forces have opened several camps inside the forests which were once Maoist strongholds, due to which the rebels are not able to carry out continuous attacks. Also more than 2,300 mobile towers have been installed, about 5,000 km of roads have been built. At the same time, construction and other infrastructure work is also being done.
