The Bombay High Court on Tuesday refused bail to INX Media co-founder Indrani Mukerjea in the Sheena Bora murder case. The Bombay High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Indrani Mukerjea, prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case. Mukherjee’s lawyer Sana Khan said she would now approach the Supreme Court for bail.
It may be mentioned that Mukherjee has been imprisoned in Mumbai’s Byculla Women’s Prison since his arrest in August 2015. This is the first time that Mukherjee had tried to get bail from the High Court in his case. Earlier, he was denied bail several times by the special CBI court. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing this 2012 murder case. Mukherjee is facing trial for the alleged murder of his daughter Sheena Bora (24).
On August 19, the CBI had told a special court in Mumbai that the agency would no longer investigate the Sheena Bora murder case. The CBI was investigating the case since 2015. The CBI had taken this case from the Mumbai Police. According to the case registered by the Mumbai Police in this case, Sheena Bora was abducted in April 2012 and then strangled to death.
In this case 4 people were made accused. In which Indrani Mukerjea and her husband Peter Mukerjea were also involved. Later this case was transferred to CBI. The CBI had filed several charge sheets against the four accused in this case. After completion of 6 years of investigation and filing of at least 5 chargesheets, the CBI has now told the special court that it will no longer investigate the matter further.
Trial in this case started in the year 2017. Statements of about 60 witnesses have been recorded so far. Besides Indrani and Peter, Indrani’s ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and Indrani’s driver Shyamvar Rai were also made accused in the case.
The case came to light when Indrani’s driver Shyamvar Rai was arrested in August 2015 in connection with another case. During the investigation, he had confessed to killing Sheena Bora in April 2012. He had told the police that Sheena’s dead body was dumped in Raigad, Maharashtra. He had also told the Mumbai Police that Sheena’s mother Indrani Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna were also involved in this dreadful murder.
It was only after this that the CBI took over the case from the Mumbai Police. Three months after the registration of the case, the CBI arrested Peter Mukerjea. Peter Mukerjea was Indrani’s third husband. In this case, he was arrested for helping Indrani. Indrani Mukerjea is said to have killed Sheena Bora because she suspected that there was a connection between Sheena and Rahul Mukerjea. Rahul Mukherjee is the son of Peter Mukerjea.
According to CBI, Indrani used to tell Sheena as her sister in front of everyone. It is said that Sheena Bora had threatened Indrani that she would reveal her reality to everyone that she was not his sister, but her daughter. In this case, Peter Mukerjea got bail from a special CBI court in March 2020. During the trial itself, Peter and Indrani had also decided to end their relationship. In October 2019, a divorce took place between the two in a family court in Mumbai.
