NCB Regional Director Sameer Wankhede is a government official and anyone can review his work. This was stated by the Bombay High Court on Wednesday during the hearing of a defamation suit filed by Wankhede’s father against NCP leader Nawab Malik. Sameer Wankhede’s father Dhyandev Wankhede has sought a compensation of Rs 1.25 crore from Malik and a court order to restrain him from making any fake or false remarks against the Wankhede family in future. Nawab Malik, a minister in the Uddhav government, has leveled allegations against Sameer Wankhede by holding press conferences several times.
One of these includes the allegation of making a fake birth certificate to get a government job. During the hearing, Dhyandev Wankhede’s advocate Arshad Sheikh questioned why Sameer should give an explanation to a person who is “just an MLA, not a court”. To this Justice Madhav Jamdar said, ‘You are a government officer. All you have to prove is that the tweets (by Malik) are prima facie wrong. Your son is not just a person but he is a government official and any member of the public can review him.
On the other hand, the court asked Malik’s lawyer Atul Damle, ‘Isn’t it your responsibility to verify the documents before submission? Did you, being a responsible citizen and spokesperson of the national political party, verify the documents?’ Wankhede’s counsel sought more time to file an additional affidavit to prove Malik’s allegations were false. The court gave him time till Friday and asked the NCP leader’s counsel to file an affidavit in this regard that he had verified the documents (containing personal details of Sameer Wankhede) before posting it on Twitter. The court has fixed November 12 for the next hearing of the matter.
