New Delhi (LokSatya). The prestigious Khel Ratna Award has been renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Earlier this award was Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in the name of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given this information by tweeting.
In a tweet on Friday, Modi said, "Amidst the moments that have made the country proud, the request of many countrymen has also come to the fore that the name of Khel Ratna Award should be dedicated to Major Dhyan Chand ji. Considering the sentiments of the people, it is now being renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.”
In another tweet, he said, "We are all overwhelmed by the great efforts of Indian players in the Olympic Games. The willpower shown by our sons and daughters, especially in hockey, the zeal to win is a great inspiration for the present and future generations.”
The Prime Minister said that Major Dhyan Chand was one of the leading sportspersons of India. He brought honor and glory to the country. It is fitting that the highest sporting honor of our country be named after him.
The decision comes a day after the Indian hockey team won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Major Dhyan Chand was known worldwide as a prolific player of hockey and is called the magician of hockey.
It was only on the strength of Major Dhyan Chand that India had proved its supremacy in hockey at the world level and it was due to him that the country won gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games.
