There are only a few months left in the Punjab elections, but the political ruckus present here is not taking the name of ending. After the opposition of agricultural laws first and then the ruckus in the Congress government, now the politics in Punjab has heated up on a new issue. In fact, on Wednesday, the Union Home Ministry has increased the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force in three states, one of which is also Punjab. The jurisdiction of the BSF in the state has been increased from 15 km to 50 km, i.e., within the Indian territory from the border, the BSF can conduct search operations, arrest and seizure within a radius of 50 km, that too without passing any orders. While Congress leader Sunil Jakhar has opened a front against CM Channi on this new order, former CM Captain Amarinder Singh has come in support of it.
Congress leader Sunil Jakhar questioned Channi
Former Punjab Congress President Sunil Jakhar has once again expressed his displeasure on Twitter. He has questioned his own party leader and CM Charanjit Singh Channi whether he has inadvertently handed over half of Punjab to the Centre. Jakhar has said that now out of the 50000 sq km area of Punjab, about 25000 sq km will be under the BSF. Punjab Police will only stand.
CM Charanjit told the unilateral decision of the Center
CM Channi, who is facing opposition within the party itself, has also opposed this decision of the Center by tweeting. He tweeted, “I strongly condemn the unilateral decision of the Government of India to give additional powers to the BSF within a radius of 50 km running along the international borders. This is a direct attack on federalism. CM Channi has demanded from Home Minister Amit Shah that this decision should be withdrawn immediately.
Deputy CM Randhawa said – people will not tolerate this
Punjab Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said on this, Tehm condemns this decision. This is a violation of the federal structure and will create an atmosphere of fear in Punjab. People will not tolerate this.’ Regarding Jakhar’s tweet, Randhawa said that me and Jakhar sahib come from the border areas. He shouldn’t have tweeted like this.
Captain welcomed the decision of the Center
At the same time, Captain Amarinder Singh, who is angry with former Punjab CM and Congress, has welcomed this decision. The Captain said, ‘Our soldiers are being killed in Kashmir. We are seeing that more and more arms and narcotics are being sent to Punjab by Pakistan-backed terrorists. The increased presence and strength of BSF will only strengthen us further. Don’t drag the Central Armed Forces into politics.
What’s in the new order?
Now the officers have been given the powers of arrest, search and seizure, increasing the jurisdiction of the BSF. This right has been given to the BSF within 50 km of the international border between India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh. In simple words, now BSF can arrest and search within this jurisdiction even without the order and warrant of the magistrate. In Punjab, West Bengal and Assam, there was a search and arrest authority within a radius of 15 km, which has now been increased to 50 km.
