Today is November 15 and today is also important because Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse was hanged on this day. Mahatma Gandhi is regarded as one of the greatest leaders in world history. To liberate Mother India from the chains of slavery, Mahatma Gandhi took the pledge of non-violence and satyagraha throughout his life, but he did not get to breathe in the air of freedom for long. The country became independent on 15 August 1947 and on the evening of 30 January 1948, Nathu Ram Godse fired three bullets in the chest of the priest of non-violence.
Nathuram was sentenced to death for this crime and it was on 15 November 1949, when he was hanged. The fact is interesting in itself that during the freedom struggle, Nathuram Godse was a fan of Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, but at one point he became his opponent and began to blame him for the partition of the country.
The gun with which Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948 was an Italian-made automatic pistol. This was the Beretta Cal 9 pistol, numbered 719791. After independence, Bapu struggled till his death for the deteriorating social harmony. He somehow wanted that the hearts of the people could meet and for this he had given up even eating and drinking.
did hello before firing
Godse had greeted Gandhiji before firing three bullets at him. When Godse was asked in the court why did he kill Mahatma Gandhi? So he replied in a calm voice, ‘I respect the service that Gandhi ji has done for the country. Before firing at him, I bowed down in his honor because of this, but even the biggest Mahatma does not have the right to divide the revered motherland by deceiving the public. Gandhi could have stopped the partition if he wanted, but he kept his silence even after seeing this.
what happened that day
January 30, 1948 started like a normal day. Mahatma Gandhi got up at 3.30 am, prayed. After completing his work in two hours, he went to sleep again at six in the morning. Woke up again at eight o’clock. His old friend from Durban, Rustam Sorabji, came to meet the family Gandhi. At four o’clock Vallabhbhai Patel along with his daughter Maniben reached Gandhi and kept on consulting him till the time of prayer, that is, after five o’clock in the evening. During the conversation with Patel, Bapu kept spinning the spinning wheel. His colleague Abha knew that Gandhi did not like arriving late to the prayer meeting. She was upset, she did not dare to interrupt Patel. Finally, somehow intervened and when Gandhi got up to go to the prayer meeting, it was five to ten minutes.
After this, while talking, Mahatma Gandhi had reached the place of prayer. Gandhi folded his hands in response to the greetings of the people. From the left, Nathuram Godse leaned towards him and felt that he was trying to touch Gandhi’s feet. But then Godse took out the pistol and fired three bullets one after the other into Gandhiji’s chest and stomach. The last voices that came out of Bapu ji’s mouth were, O Ram…..Ra….. O and his lifeless body fell to the bottom.
