The corona virus epidemic is not over yet that the cases of norovirus in Kerala have raised concerns. Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Friday appealed to the people to be aware of this stomach related disease and issued guidelines. 13 cases of norovirus have been found in Wayanad, Kerala.

Two weeks ago norovirus, an animal-borne disease spread through contaminated water and food, was reported in 13 students of a veterinary college at Pukode near Vithiri in Wayanad district. Veena George said, “There is nothing to worry right now, but everyone needs to be alert. Activities including super chlorination are underway. There is a need to keep the drinking water sources clean.” He said that the disease can be cured with proper prevention and treatment. Therefore everyone should be aware of the disease and the ways to prevent it.

What is norovirus?

Norovirus causes gastrointestinal illness, which includes symptoms such as inflammation of the stomach and intestines, severe vomiting and diarrhea. Norovirus does not cause much effect on healthy people, but it can be dangerous for young children, the elderly and people suffering from other serious diseases. It is transmitted from one person to another by coming in contact with an infected person or touching an infected place. The virus is also spread through the feces and vomit of an infected person.

What are the symptoms of norovirus

Diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, high fever, headache and body aches are some of the common symptoms of norovirus. Experts say that excessive diarrhea or vomiting can lead to loss of water in the body and this can lead to complications.

How to avoid Norovirus?

In the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health of Kerala, it has been said that those who are infected with Norovirus should take rest at home. Keep drinking ORS and boiled water. Wash hands thoroughly before eating food and after defecation. People who come into contact with animals need special attention.
