Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has demanded an apology from Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik for his remarks taking advantage of the Roshni Act. Mufti said that Satyapal Malik should withdraw his statement or else she will take legal action against him. In fact, Satyapal Malik had said in one of his statements that Mehbooba Mufti had also taken advantage of the Roshni Act which came in 2001. Under this law, the people who were in possession of government land were given ownership rights. Satya Pal Malik had said that taking advantage of this law, Mehbooba Mufti had also got the land transferred in her name.
Now Mehbooba Mufti has objected to this saying that Satyapal Malik’s statement is extremely irresponsible. He said that my legal team is preparing to sue Satyapal Malik. He should either withdraw his statement or else legal action will be taken against him. Mehbooba Mufti has said this while sharing the video of Satyapal Malik’s statement. In this video, Satyapal Malik is seen saying that former state CM Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti had got plots done in their names under the Roshni Act.
This law was brought in 2001 only during the CM tenure of Farooq Abdullah. Under this law, a provision was made to give land rights to the occupiers of government land in exchange for some amount. The amount received from the land allotment was used for setting up hydroelectric power plants in the state. Because of this, it was named Roshni Scheme. However, the scheme was put on hold on the orders of the High Court. Not only this, the High Court had ordered the CBI to investigate this scheme.
