The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is consolidating its alliance with its regional allies for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, may now have limited synergy with the Janata Dal (United). There have also been talks between senior leaders of both the parties in this regard. The influence of JDU is believed to be in about two dozen assembly constituencies bordering Uttar Pradesh adjoining Bihar.

The alliance between BJP and JDU is limited to Bihar. In Uttar Pradesh, there has been an alliance between the BJP and the JDU in the past, but there has been no electoral synergy between the two parties for the past few years. BJP leaders consider the reason for this as the lack of JDU’s support base in Uttar Pradesh, but in view of the social equations, this time talks are taking place between the leaders of both the parties.

In fact, there are about two dozen assembly constituencies of Uttar Pradesh bordering Bihar where JDU is claiming itself to be effective. Apart from this, JDU leaders also say that it has a lot of penetration in the Kurmi and Bhumihar class of Uttar Pradesh. If there is an alliance, BJP can get more benefit from it.

JDU General Secretary KC Tyagi has been in touch with BJP leaders for a long time and he says that two rounds of talks have also taken place between senior leaders of BJP and JDU. These include talks of the top leadership of JDU with Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. It is worth noting that earlier KC Tyagi has also spoken of contesting elections alone in the state if there is no alliance, but he has made it clear that JDU’s priority is on alliance with BJP and its efforts are continuing.

Next week Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is coming to Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of caste census. Sources say that during this time informal talks can be held between BJP and JDU leaders regarding Uttar Pradesh. A senior JD(U) leader has said that it is time for elections and talks are progressing slowly. He claimed that if both the parties come together, the BJP will get more of its benefit as it is contesting more seats. He does not want to make any claim about the number of seats JD(U) will fight, but whatever the situation will be, it will be respectable.

JDU also says that in the event of an alliance, Nitish Kumar will also enter the election campaign and his campaign will certainly create an additional advantage for the BJP. This will also send a new social message.
