Hockey coach angry over non-receipt of Dronacharya award, HC reached against Centre’s decision


Hockey coach Sandeep Sangwan approached the Delhi High Court against the deletion of his name from the Dronacharya Award. He demanded from the High Court that the decision of the Sports Ministry should be set aside in which he was excluded from the Dronacharya Award for 2021. The court has sought a response from the central government in the matter.

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court heard the application of hockey coach Sandeep Sangwan. In the application, an appeal has been made against the decision to exclude the 2021 Dronacharya Award. Justice Rekha Palli, while hearing the matter, has sought a response from the Center. Also, the next hearing of the case has been fixed for November 12.

Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma and Standing Counsel Anil Soni represented the Centre. Advocate R Arunadhari Iyer, appearing for Sandeep Sangwan, said in the petition filed in the High Court that Sandeep is a famous hockey coach. His name was sent by the selection committee for the Dronacharya award. But this recommendation was ignored by the ministry. Not only this, among the four people who applied for this award, including the petitioner, the petitioner (Sandeep Sangwan) is the most talented. Despite this, the award was given to someone else.

The petition has sought directions to the authorities to record and set aside the November 2 decision of the ministry. The petitioner has also sought a direction to additionally confer the Dronacharya Award for 2021 for his performance as a coach on the basis of merit as per the points system.


Not only this, the petition has also sought to fix a suitable timetable for the declaration of Dronacharya Award and other sports awards by the end of May every year in future so that due time and opportunity can be provided to the distinguished sportspersons in this regard. .

The petitioner said that he is a highly qualified and experienced coach for the sport of hockey, having coached several other Olympians, as well as Padma Shri and Arjun, besides the four members of the bronze medal winning team at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The petition said that Sandeep Sangwan, who was a coach for more than 15 years, has also served as coach and manager on several occasions for the national men’s team.

Let us inform that on October 31, 10 players associated with various sports were recommended for the prestigious National Sports Awards. These include players working in Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). The All India Public Sector Sports Promotion Board had recommended the Dronacharya Award to hockey coach Sandeep Sangwan.
