Senior advocate Harish Salve may represent India in the court of Dominica regarding the extradition of PNB scam accused diamond trader Mehul Choksi to New Delhi. Salve is currently the legal advisor to Queen Elizabeth of Britain. He has successfully represented India in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case. The Government of India is now consulting with Choksi to bring him back.
In a statement issued on Monday, Salve said, ‘I am guiding the Government of India on the steps to be taken in the hearing of the extradition case of Mehul Choksi in the court of Dominica. If India is given an opportunity of being heard and the Attorney General of Dominica agrees to my admission in the court there, I will represent India in the matter. The senior counsel clarified that the Government of India was not a party to the court of Dominica. She is just helping the Dominica administration.
Mehul Choksi had fled India in January 2018 long before the over Rs 13500 crore PNB scam came to light. Earlier, in 2017, he had taken citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda. On 23 May, he went missing from Antigua under mysterious circumstances. He was later arrested in the neighboring country of Dominica. India is trying to bring Choksi straight from Dominica to New Delhi. However, after not getting bail from the magistrate court in Dominica, Choksi has filed a bail application in the high court there.
Choksi’s rights will be protected: Dominica
Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt said on Tuesday that the rights of Mehul Choksi, accused of illegally entering the country from Antigua and Barbuda, will be protected. The court will soon decide on the further course of action in his case.
In a statement issued to the media, Skerit said, “As has been the case so far, all rights of Mehul Choksi will be protected.” He clarified that since Choksi’s extradition matter is between India and Antigua, Dominica has no objection to it. We are a different side. We should perform our duties and responsibilities in this context.
