For the first time in Kerala, the father-in-law and son-in-law will sit together in the assembly and thus begin a new chapter in history. The 77-year-old father-in-law is none other than Chief Minister P. Vijayan, while the son-in-law is her daughter’s husband PA Mohammed Riaz, who is the National President of the Democratic Youth Federation. Riaz is the husband of Vijayan’s daughter Veena and the two got married on 15 June 2020 at Clef House, the chief minister’s official residence.
Vijayan won from Dharmadam seat in Kannur district by an end of 50,000 votes while Riyaz, 44, was elected from the Left party stronghold Beypore in Kozhikode district. There is a history of elected sons and daughters of political parties to the Legislative Assembly, but this is the first time that both father-in-law and son-in-law have been elected to the Legislative Assembly. Riyaz contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Kozhikode but lost.
In the Assembly elections held on April 6, the children of many leaders had lost their fortune but many had to face defeat. Left party partner Kerala Congress (M) chief Jose K Mani and her sister’s husband MP Joseph contested as a UDF candidate but both lost to Pala and Trikkarpur respectively.
Kerala Congress President PJ Joseph Thodupuzha won from the seat while his son-in-law Dr Joseph lost from the Kothamangalam seat as a Twenty20 candidate. The children of former ministers and legislators of the ruling CPI (M) -led LDF and the opposition Congress-led UDF had won their seats in the assembly elections held on April 6 from 20 seats.
