Cats are more feared than dogs in Kerala and the state has reported more cases of cat bites than dog bites in the last few years. In January this year alone, 28,186 cases of cat bites were reported while there were 20,875 cases of dog bites.

It also provides data on bites by dogs and cats between 2013 and 2021, as well as the amount spent on ‘anti-rabies vaccines and serums’.

According to statistics, there has been an increase in the cases of cat bites since 2016. In 2016, 1,60,534 people treated for cat bites while 1,35,217 cases of dog bites were reported. Cat bite cases increased to 1,60,785 in 2017, 1,75,368 in 2018 and 2,04,625 and 2,16,551 in 2019 and 2020 respectively. In the southern state, there was a 128 percent increase in cases of cat bites from 2014 to 2020. According to government data, 1,35,749 cases of dog bites were reported in 2017, 1,48,365 in 2018, 1,61,050 in 2019 and 1,60,483 in 2020. Last year five people died of rabies.
