Delay due to accident: 75 thousand deaths in 2020 due to speeding, 60% of road accidents due to over speed

Last year 75,333 people died in road accidents due to speeding in India. While two lakh nine thousand 736 road passengers were injured. According to the latest government data, 2,15,159 out of 3,54,796 road accidents were caused by overspeeding of vehicles, which accounts for 60 per cent of road accidents. According to the annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the number of dead in road accidents has come down from 0.52 to 0.45 (per thousand vehicles) in 2020 as compared to 2019. There has been a decrease in road accidents. There were 467171 road accidents in 2019 while in 2020 this number decreased to 368828. In 2020, 146354 people died and 336248 people were injured in road accidents.

Reduction in road accidents for the first time in UP

For the first time, the number of road accidents has come down in Uttar Pradesh. There were 30590 road accidents in the state in 2020 while in 2019 this number was 42368. In terms of reduction in road accidents, Tamil Nadu is at number one, there were 59499 accidents in 2019 and decreased to 46443 in 2020. In second place is Kerala, where road accidents have reduced from 40354 to 27998. According to the NCRB report, most of the road accidents in 2020 were due to over speeding of vehicles. Apart from this, 86248 road accidents occurred due to negligence or overtake. In this 35219 people died and 77067 people were injured.

Most of the two wheeler riders died

Out of total road accidents in 2020, 58,120 (43 per cent) deaths were caused by two wheelers. At the same time, 17538 people (13 percent) were killed in car accidents and 16993 people (12.8 percent) were killed in truck accidents. In this, 5877 (10 percent) people died due to two wheelers in Maharashtra and 5735 (9 percent) in UP. UP is at the fore in car accidents, with 3190 (18%) deaths out of 17,538 total car accidents.

For the first time the death toll exceeds the injured

The shocking revelation in the report is that every year the number of injured in road accidents is high and the number of dead is less. But this is the first time when the death toll in road accidents exceeds the injured in three states. In Mizoram, 53 people died and 45 were injured in 47 road accidents. In Punjab, 3916 people died and 2881 were injured in 5173 accidents. At the same time, 19037 people died in 28653 accidents in UP while 15982 people were injured.
