The Supreme Court of the country has given strict instructions to the West Bengal government regarding ‘One Nation-One Ration Card’. On Friday, the Supreme Court has ordered the Mamata Banerjee government of the state, saying that ‘no excuse, immediately implement One Nation-One Ration Card’. The court has also said that you cannot cite one problem or the other. This is for migrant laborers.
Along with this, the Supreme Court has reserved its decision on the problems raised by the migrant laborers during the lockdown. In fact, during the lockdown, the unorganized laborers had problems in the registration process. Only after registration, the workers could take advantage of the beneficial schemes being run by various governments. The Supreme Court has reserved its decision on this matter for the time being.
Let us tell you that earlier the West Bengal government had talked about keeping the state out of the ‘One Nation-One Ration Card’ scheme. But now the Supreme Court has directed the Mamta government to implement it immediately. The central government’s argument about the ‘One Nation-One Ration Card’ scheme has been that under this scheme, PDS holders across the country will be able to get their share of ration from public distribution system shops in any corner of the country. The government says that after this people moving from one place to another due to job or other reasons will not be deprived of subsidized ration.
Recently, amidst the ongoing dispute between the Central Government and the Delhi Government over the ‘Ghar Ghar Ration Scheme’, the Central Government had asked the Delhi Government to immediately implement the ‘One Nation-One Ration Card’ scheme. A few days ago, the Union Consumer Ministry, in a letter to the Chief Secretary of the Delhi Government, had said that this scheme should be implemented immediately so that at least one million migrant workers of Delhi can get its immediate benefits.
In the past, the Supreme Court had also said that it will not remain a mute spectator to the issue of public welfare policies. Judicial review of policies is his duty. Let us inform that till now many states including Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab and Odisha have implemented the ‘One Nation-One Ration Card’ scheme.
