The central government has deposited in the Supreme Court Rs 10 crore paid by the Italian government as compensation to the families of two fishermen from Kerala. Both these fishermen from Kerala were killed by the Italian marines. In its petition, the central government had sought closure of the case against two Italian soldiers in the murder case of two Indian fishermen. After this, in the last hearing, the Supreme Court had asked the central government to deposit the amount of compensation given by the Italian government of Rs 10 crore in the account of the relatives of the deceased fishermen.

According to news agency ANI, the central government told the Supreme Court that it has decided to pay the compensation paid by Italy to the families of two fishermen from Kerala in lieu of closing criminal cases against two Italian marines in India. 10 crore has been deposited.

According to the Indian Express news, the central government had told the Supreme Court that Rs 4 crore would be given to both the deceased fishermen, while the injured owner of the boat would be given Rs 2 crore as compensation for the loss. The Supreme Court had said during the last hearing that it would not close the case without hearing the kin of the deceased and they should also be given adequate compensation.

Seeking a speedy hearing on the petition, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, on behalf of the Central Government in the Supreme Court, had told that the outstanding compensation has also been given to the families of the deceased. In July 2020, the government told the Supreme Court that it has decided to accept and comply with the International Tribunal’s decision (21 May 2020) in the case of killing of Indian fishermen by two Italian Navy soldiers, which said that India has He is entitled to compensation in the case but because of the exemption given to these soldiers, he cannot prosecute them.

The Center had filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking closure of the ongoing proceedings against the Italian Marines. It may be mentioned that on February 15, 2012, two marines were fired upon from the MT Enrica Lexi ship in the sea, 20.5 nautical miles off the Kerala coast, killing two fishermen. Both these fishermen were from Kerala. The police had registered a case against the Italian marines.
