Since the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh from the post of CM, the names of many veteran faces including Pratap Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Randhawa, Sunil Jakhar and Ambika Soni were being taken in Punjab. But by the end of the evening on Sunday, all the equations came to a standstill and the Congress has taken a surprise decision to make Charanjit Singh Channi as the CM of Punjab. He will be the first Dalit CM of the state. Experts who have a hold on the politics of Punjab say that the Congress has made him the CM so that the factionalism of big leaders can be removed. This was the motive that instead of making any leader in the club of veterans as CM, the relatively new leader Charanjit Singh Channi has been chosen.

Charanjit Singh Channi Ramdasiya, who became MLA for the third time from Chamkaur seat, comes from the Sikh community. This is the reason that his hold is very good among the Sikhs apart from the Hindu Dalits. Apart from this, he has been a leader of clean image. In such a situation, Congress has tried to solve many equations by making him the CM. In fact, there has been a demand from opposition parties to give a post like CM or Deputy CM to a Dalit leader in the state for a long time. Even the Akali Dal had announced that if it comes to power, then a Dalit leader will be made the Deputy CM. In such a situation, this bet of Congress can prove to be a cut of its announcement.

Will the party emerge from the camp of Sidhu, Captain, Bajwa and Jakhar?

While the feud between Captain Amarinder Singh and Navjot Sidhu is well known in the state, Sidhu has not had a good relationship with Pratap Singh Bajwa either. Apart from this, there is a danger of displeasure of the Sikhs in the event of Jakhar being made the CM. That is why by making Channi the CM, the Congress has ended factionalism on the one hand, while on the other hand it has worked to cultivate the Sikhs as well as the Dalits. Let us tell you that the Dalit population in the state has been close to 30 percent and till now the making of a CM of the community in the state has been an issue. However, it remains to be seen how Channi can benefit the Congress in the elections to be held next year.

Will the wind come out against the captain too?

Captain Amarinder Singh had spoken of protests against Sidhu being made his successor, hours after resigning from the post of CM. He sharply criticized Sidhu, saying that he was a disaster even as a minister. Not only this, he said that Punjab is a marginal state and making Sidhu as CM can be a threat to the country. Amarinder Singh had said that Navjot Sidhu had relations with Pakistan PM Imran Khan and it would not be appropriate for him to become CM. In such a situation, the Congress has tried to remove the wind of opposition to Captain Amarinder by making Channi the CM.
