If the temperature of the earth continues to increase at the current rate, then before the next decade, there will be a huge upheaval in global agriculture. This has been claimed in a research report published in the journal ‘Nature Food’. According to the report, as the temperature of the earth increases further, areas favorable for particular crops will also start shifting unfavorably.
It has been said that due to the high temperature of the earth, there will be a lack of nutrients in the grains. Similarly, due to the high amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, by the end of the century, the production of maize will decrease by 25 percent. However, due to this, the production of wheat will increase by about 17 per cent. The research was led by Jagermeier, an expert from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), Columbia University in New York and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).
Maize production to decline soon in some areas: According to the report, rising heat in terms of maize production will be more harmful for subtropical and tropical countries than for colder regions. In North and Central America, West Africa, Central and East Asia, maize production is expected to decline by more than 20 percent in the coming years.
Reason for increasing wheat productivity: An isothermic climate is required for wheat production. This would increase the corresponding productivity in the United States, Canada and China. Apart from this, more carbon dioxide present in the air is also effective in increasing the productivity of wheat.
Food security crisis The report said that changes in crop productivity will have the biggest impact on small farmers in poor countries. This will not only widen the gap between rich and poor countries but will also create a crisis of food security.
Big challenge for farmers to reconcileAccording to the report, it will be a big challenge for the farmers to adjust to climate change. Due to this, the date of sowing of the crop may have to be changed. A different variety of crop may be required to avoid loss in yield.
The main four reasons for the reversal
1- Elevated temperature : If the temperature of the earth continues to rise, then areas of certain types of plants, medicines and fruits will start shifting. That is, favorable areas for a plant may be unfavorable. Similarly, unfavorable areas can be favorable for a plant.
2- Excess carbon dioxide: More carbon dioxide in the air also works to increase the temperature. Apart from this, due to its high presence, the production of many crops, including maize, decreases.
3: Changes in the Rain Cycle: The effect of global warming is beginning to be seen on the rainfall cycle. Changes in the rainfall cycle lead to drought or flood. This causes great damage to the crops.
4. Heat Wave: The effect of global warming is now being seen in the form of deadly heat wave even in cold regions. This will also affect the fauna including crops adapted to the cold climate.
