Chhattisgarh: About 100 people including 50 children sick due to food poisoning

Nearly a hundred people have fallen ill after allegedly consuming food at a Dashgatra event in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district. Most of the sick are children. Mahasamund district officials said on Thursday that around 100 people fell ill after allegedly consuming food during a Dashgatra program on Wednesday in Anshula village of the district. 100 people, including 50 children who fell ill, have been admitted to hospitals. Others have been discharged after first aid.

Mahasamund District Magistrate Doman Singh said that on Wednesday evening in Anshula village of Pithora development block, the villagers had food at Dilip Sahu’s house in the Dasgatra (the ritual of the tenth day after the death of the person) program. District officials said that Dilip Sahu is posted as the headmaster of Government Primary School, Ansula. In the program of Dashgatra, the children of primary and secondary school had food along with the local villagers.

About 100 people, including women and children, complained of restlessness and food poisoning-like symptoms within two-three hours of having the meal, after which they were taken to nearby hospitals, officials said. Officials said that after getting information about the incident, the Collector, other officials of the district administration and health officials visited the hospitals to take stock of the situation. Along with this, a health team has also been sent to the village. He said that 48 people, including 42 children and two women, have been admitted to Pithora Community Health Center and 12 others to Sakra Health Center. The condition of the sick is stated to be out of danger.

The remaining other villagers have been discharged from hospitals after first aid, officials said. He said that investigation is being done to find out the exact cause of food poisoning. Asked whether action would be taken against Sahu for inviting school children. Then Collector Singh said that he has asked the District Education Officer (DEO) to give a detailed report in this regard.
