Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Channi, who is going to become the Chief Minister of Punjab, is the choice of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who has given him priority over many strong leaders of the party. Congress sources say that it was generally agreed within the party that as per the practice till now, only a Jat Sikh leader should be given the responsibility of the Chief Minister of the state, but Rahul Gandhi stamped Channi’s name.
A senior Congress leader aware of the entire exercise of electing Channi as the leader of the legislature party said that Rahul Gandhi has always been giving priority to the leaders of the Dalit and tribal communities. Here too he stamped Channi’s name and gave a big message that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party want to give the biggest responsibility to the people of the Dalit community.
According to sources, Rahul Gandhi had given in-principle consent to Channi’s name on Saturday itself, although the opinion of the MLAs was taken in this regard. Behind this move of Rahul Gandhi and Congress, an attempt has also been made to give a political message to the states of North India, especially Uttar Pradesh, where assembly elections are to be held next year. A Congress leader said, “Today there are Congress-led governments in three states, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Punjab.
Two of these states, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, have OBC chief ministers, while Punjab is going to have a Dalit chief minister. We do not deny that a political message has also been sent through this move.
