Washington, Sep 17 (AP) A Muslim civil rights group in the US has called for a boycott of Hilton hotels. The move comes after an alleged plan to demolish a mosque of the Uighur community in China and build a hotel in its place. The Council on American-Islamic Relations and other organizations held a news conference outside the Capitol Hilton in Washington on Thursday and announced a boycott. China has been facing international criticism for the persecution of the Muslim Uighur population in its Xinjiang province. Critics say that the campaign was a part of cultural genocide.

China has been facing international criticism for the persecution of the Muslim Uighur population in its Xinjiang province. Critics say the campaign amounts to cultural genocide, including the detention of Uighurs in “re-education camps” and the destruction of mosques and other cultural sites.
In July, the bipartisan Congress-Executive Commission on China also called on Hilton to halt a project to build the Hampton Inn hotel.

“We can confirm that in 2019 an independent, Chinese-owned conglomerate acquired commercial development, including a hotel, through a public auction,” a spokesperson for Hotel McLean, Virginia-based Hilton, said in a statement on Thursday. A vacant land was purchased for the scheme. Hilton was not involved in the process of selecting the land.
