Before Charanjit Singh Channi, these Dalit leaders took over the responsibility of Chief Minister of different states


After the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh in Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi was made the new Chief Minister. In the political circles, it is being seen as the Dalit card of the Congress. The reason for this is that Channi, who comes from the Ramdasiya community, is the first Dalit CM of Punjab. Not only this, there are only a few Dalit leaders in the country who have reached big political positions.

Let us have a look at the Dalit leaders who have served as Chief Ministers:

Damodaram Sanjeevayya (Andhra Pradesh) was the first Dalit to become the Chief Minister. He held the position from January 1960 to March 1962. Sanjivayya became the first Dalit chief of Congress.

Freedom fighter Bhola Paswan Shastri served as the Chief Minister of Bihar from 1968 to 1971. He was also the first Dalit to be elected to the top post of the state.

Another freedom fighter Ram Sundar Das became the second Dalit Chief Minister of Bihar in 1979.


Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh four times. She is also the only woman leader of the Dalit community to hold this position.

Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde has served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra as well as a Union Minister. Shinde also belongs to the Dalit community.

Jitan Ram Manjhi served as the third Dalit Chief Minister of Bihar from May 2014 to February 2015.

Jagannath Pahadia served as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan from June 1980 to July 1981. He was the first Dalit to hold this position in the state. Congress leader Pahadia also served as the governor of Haryana and Bihar.
