The Central government on Saturday reduced the armed security cover of central paramilitary commandos given to Babul Supriyo, who left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Trinamool Congress, to ‘Y’ category. Official sources gave this information. The security cover has been reduced from the second highest level of Z category to Y category after the Union Home Ministry issued an order on Friday.
The security cover provided to VVIPs and high-risk individuals under the central scheme ranges from the highest Z plus to Z, Y plus, Y and X categories. On the downgrading of Supriyo’s security category, sources said a recommendation was made by the central security and intelligence agencies in this regard.
Supriyo, 50, who was removed as a minister from the Narendra Modi-led council of ministers in July, is being guarded by an armed contingent of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Sources indicated that a further review of his security cover cannot be ruled out, and that the task of his security could be entrusted entirely to the West Bengal Police as he has now joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Supriyo told the media after joining the ruling party in West Bengal that he was very excited to join the Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and would work for the development of the state.
