Another weapon to be found against Corona, Zydus Cadila’s vaccine may be available from October

In the fight against Corona virus, the country is soon going to get another big weapon in the form of Zydus Cadila vaccine. The central government is hopeful that Zycov-D, a needleless COVID-19 vaccine from Zydus Cadila, will be available from the first week of October. The government said on Thursday that it has not yet been decided whether vaccines will be given on a priority basis to all children or children already suffering from any other disease.

The drug regulator on Friday granted emergency approval to indigenously developed Zycov-D, making it the first vaccine in the country to be administered to adolescents aged 12-18. Regarding the negotiations in terms of pricing and the government’s plan to buy it, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said, “…From the media reports as well as our own conversations with the vaccine company, we have understood that they will start from the first week of October. Will be in a position to provide this vaccine.

“We are in talks with them and as soon as the terms and conditions of the purchase are clear, we will share it with you,” he told a press conference. Asked whether children already suffering from any other disease would be given priority in immunization, Bhushan said that the National Technology Advisory Group (NTAGI) has to make a recommendation in this regard to the Standing Committee on COVID. He said the recommendation has not been made yet and the government will take a decision after NTAGI takes a decision in this regard.
